volksbild

2007 – 2012

The volksbild archive, founded in 2007, was conceived as a collection of non-professional private photographs of unknown origin. Slides and photographs were gathered from different decades and geographical contexts, forming a visual record of social image practices and a fragment of collective visual memory.

All images were digitised, organised and curated according to different thematic and visual criteria. As an online archive, volksbild recontextualised private images, shifting them from domestic settings into a new visual and discursive field.

The archive functioned both as an autonomous artistic project and as a source for further works and collaborations. Numerous projects presented on this website emerged from this context.

The website was taken offline in 2012 for technical reasons.

Iconic Turn

The project is accompanied by theoretical reflections on the “iconic turn” and the increasing ubiquity of images in everyday life, addressing shifts in image production, circulation and perception.
